"We need an app." We hear this often. Sometimes it is the right call. Often, a well-designed website meets the need better and faster.
Here is how to decide.
What a website does better
A website is available to everyone, instantly, with nothing to install. All it takes is a link.
- Visibility on Google: people who don't know you yet can find you.
- No installation: customers click and they're on your page.
- One version for every device: desktop, tablet, Android, and iPhone.
- Instant updates, with no App Store or Google Play review.
To present a business, attract new customers, and receive inquiries, a website is almost always the starting point.
What an app does better
An app makes sense when your customers come back often and use a service regularly.
- Notifications for bookings, promotions, or deliveries
- Access to phone features: camera, location, payments
- Offline use for some features
- Loyalty: your icon stays on the customer's home screen
Delivery, booking, and loyalty apps, or internal tools for your team, are good examples.
Questions to ask yourself
- Will customers use your service several times a week?
- Do you need notifications or location?
- Do you already have a website that attracts visitors?
- Have you planned for ongoing app maintenance and updates?
If you answer "no" to the first two, start with a website.
The middle ground: web apps
Between the two are progressive web apps (PWAs). These are websites that behave like apps: installable on the home screen, fast, and able to work partly offline.
They are often a great way to test an idea before building a native app.
Our recommendation
For most businesses, the right order is:
- A fast website optimized for Google
- An active presence on social media
- A mobile app once your customers' usage justifies it
